Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. Glasgow Queen Street High Level - Description of the Scheme

Description of the Scheme

Glasgow Queen Street High Level, EGIP, Key Output 1

The Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvements Programme (EGIP?) will upgrade Central Scotland’s transport links through the delivery of improved rail connections between Edinburgh and Glasgow, providing faster and longer formation electric services. This programme will see electrification of the core Edinburgh to Glasgow line (via Falkirk High).

Along with route electrification, a number of infrastructure packages have been identified as necessary to achieve the high level outputs defined for the programme. Works are required at Glasgow Queen Street Station to enhance the current infrastructure to the level required to meet the demands of the proposed 2017 EGIP timetable. Queen Street Station Remodelling shall alter the station area, increasing flexibility with more parallel pathing opportunities, optimisation of the throat layout and increase the lengths of the platforms to allow more flexibility in docking.

Glasgow Queen Street High Level station was closed from Sunday 20th March until Saturday 6th August 2016, to allow the track remodelling work and renewal of 1800m of concrete slab track in Queen Street High Level Tunnel.

During this time services to Inverness and Aberdeen ran from Glasgow Central, while other services were divered via Springburn of Maryhill to run through Glasgow Queen Street Low Level.

METHOD OF WORKING

The new Re-signalled area will be controlled from Cowlairs Workstation 1 (Edinburgh IECC). Signalling will be operated under Track Circuit Block regulations.

Axle counters will continue to be the method of train detection from Buffer Stops in Queen Street Station up to north portal of Queen Street Tunnel.

POINTS
All points in tunnel and station throat area are renewed as part of this project. These are –
Up Throat area (Platforms 1-4) – 749, 752, 753B and 754, which are Mk2 Clamp Lock type
Down Throat area (Platforms 5-7) - 750, 751 and 753A, which are Mk2 Clamp Lock type
Tunnel - 747A/B crossover and 748A/B crossover, which are HW2000 type
Crossovers have split end detection.

The routing in and out of all platforms is similar to prior to closure, however positioning of points has been altered to take into account new platform layout.

PERMISSIBLE SPEEDS / LINESIDE SIGNAGE
Alterations to Permissible Speed
Up Direction – previous 15mph speed restriction in Up Direction from buffer ends to tunnel mouth, is now divided into two separate restrictions –
• 15mph from buffer end to platform starter signal
• 20mph from platform starter signal to tunnel mouth (platform 1 only); 25mph from platform starter signal to tunnel mouth (platforms 2-7)

The 50mph speed restriction at tunnel mouth applies for Up Line routes continuing on Up Line, however 25mph speed restriction applies when taking crossover to signal CQ250 on Down Line. Similarly, 50mph applies for Down Line routes continuing on Down Line, with 25mph restriction applying when taking crossover to signal CQ58 on the Up Line.

Alterations to Permissible Speed Indicators – Up Direction
50 mph Up Direction at Speed boards (both lines 0m 13ch) at tunnel mouth are now altered to miniature size (450x450mm), and are now accompanied by 25mph miniature boards applying to the crossovers.
