Introduction


The proposals for the airport rail link include the construction of a railway station at the main terminal at Edinburgh Airport and trains would arrive and depart via a tunnel.

Rail passengers and airport users would be able to travel on trains to and from Edinburgh, and destinations to the north, west and the south including Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, Fife, Inverness, Dundee and Aberdeen

Timescale


Construction of the scheme will involve major civil engineering works. The indicative timescales are:

  • Dec 2003 to Dec 2004: Technical Development incl Public Consultation
  • Jan to May 2005: Develop Environmental Statement, Bill & Business Case
  • Late Summer 2005: Introduction of Bill to Scottish Parliament
  • 14/03/07: Passed by Scottish Parliament
  • April 2007: Royal Assent to the Bill
  • Late 2007:Prep Work
  • Early 2008-2011: Construction period
  • Late 2011: Rail Link operational

Cancellation


On 28th September 2007 the Transport Minister, Stewart Stevenson, formally announced the abandonment of this scheme, replacing it with a new station at Gogar to interchange with Edinburgh Tram and improvements to the Edinburgh to Glasgow via Falkirk line.
