Babcock Rail

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.
Babcock International Group is a provider of multi-disciplinary rail infrastructure services.

Babcock Rail was known as First Engineering until July 2008.

The Track Renewals division is based at Glasgow Salkeld Street, and has the contract for plain line renewal and tamping for Network Rail in Scotland.

First Engineering has invested in a fleet of modern On Track Plant machines, which are based at Rutherglen Depot.

There are also depots at Portobello, Beattock and Shettleston.

First Swietelsky is a joint venture between First Engineering Ltd and Swietelsky GmbH of Austria, which has high output track renewal contracts with Network Rail in England.

First Engineering had the infrastructure maintenance contract for Scotland until this work was taken in-house by Network Rail in 2004. However, in the same year it started a contract for plain-line track renewals.

In September 2007, Network Rail awarded the contract for switch and crossing renewals, previously held by STRC, to First Engineering, to give all track renewal work in Scotland to one contactor. The new contract commenced in April 2008 with renewal works at Falkland Junction, Ayr.
