BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0

The British Railways Standard Class 4 4-6-0 steam locomotives were built from 1951 to 1957 for mixed traffic use on secondary routes.
Eighty of these engines, 75000-75079, were built at Swindon and they were based on the London Midland, Western and Southern Regions.

  • A class only rarely seen in Scotland in BR days, a few visited Cowlairs works for repairs in the mid-1960s.
  • A number of locos withdrawn from Carnforth and Tebay were cut up in Scottish scrap yards in 1968.

    • 75015/026/030/033?/037/043/058 by Arnott Young, Carmyle

  • Six locos of the class survive in preservation.

  • 75014 was used on the Fort William - Mallaig Jacobite service in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 & 2000.

  • On 25th June 1995, 75014 and support coach were hauled (tender first) by diesel 37424 from Eastfield sidings to Fort William depot. <Flickr>
    • Tuesday 27th June was launch day for the new Jacobite service, but due to the hot dry weather, 75014 was only allowed to haul this train the first mile to Fort William Jcn Yard, where a Class 37 diesel took over. <Flickr>.
    • Steam operation between Fort William to Mallaig commenced the following week.

  • In October 1997 after the Jacobite season, 75014 was used on a series of charter trains in the Highlands.
    • Saturday 4th October, 75014 hauled an Edinburgh to Inverness charter train sponsored by Whyte & Mackay. <SmugMug photos>
    • Sunday 5th October, 75014 Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and return. <Flickr Photo at Craig Highland Farm>
    • Saturday 11th October, 75014 Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and return again. <Flickr Photo, near Loch Carron>
      • These trains were organised by the 'Friends of the Kyle Line' to mark the Centenary of line from Strome Ferry to Kyle of Lochalsh.
    • Sunday 12th October, 75014 returned south with an Inverness to Edinburgh charter. <Flickr - approaching Slochd Summit>
  • On Wednesday 15 October 1997, 75015 hauled a special train from Edinburgh to Dunbar (and return) to mark the opening of a new refuse disposal facility at Oxwellmains.
  • On 16th October 1997, 75014 & Black Five 44767 departed Millerhill with ECS to Carnforth. <Flickr - At Beattock>

  • At the end of the 1998 Jacobite season, 75014 + Stanier 8F 48151 hauled a 'Deerstalker' excursion from Fort William to Edinburgh on 26th September. <Flickr - 75014 at Crianlarich>
  • The two locos then appeared at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway Steam Gala on Sunday 27th. <Flickr Photo>
  • The 4MT was intended to work Highland Railway Festival trains, but required repairs, so these were worked by the 8F.
  • After repairs 75014 ran on the B&KR on 3rd & 4th October.
  • 48151 & 75014 took the Empty Coaching stock south from Bo'ness to Carnforth (via Edinburgh) on Monday 19th October 1998. <SmugMug - Crossing Ratho Viaduct>
